Bristol School Linking aims to build relationships between children across our city. It twins year 5 primary classes from schools across Bristol’s diverse city to explore four key questions together:
Who am I? – exploring identity
Who are we? – celebrating diversity
Where do we live? – promoting community
How do we all live together? – championing equality
Over academic year 2020/21 we have been piloting the project with 13 schools who will be connecting digitally to explore these questions over the summer term – enabling Bristol’s children to connect and reach across perceived difference.
The project is free to schools and teachers are provided with all the training, lesson plans and resources they need to deliver the project. The curriculum is designed to be flexible so schools can ensure that it suits their needs and it is as simple as possible to deliver.
The 2020 pandemic has separated children from family and loved ones. It has also separated children from each other at a time when issues of racial justice and identity have been at the forefront of current events in the city. We believe that Bristol School Linking can help children to reach across the distance and divides caused by the pandemic to forge relationships that will help Bristol to build back better and help the children of Bristol to build a tolerant, inclusive and more understanding city for the future.
We have exciting plans for next academic year, which include facilitating children meeting with their partner class in person (if the pandemic allows), and elevating the voice of the children taking part in the project so that their thoughts on identity and belonging are championed across the city.

Bristol School Linking is part of the Linking Network – a network of local schools linking programmes across the country, which last academic year supported over 30,000 children to link from 28 regions across the country. The Linking Network and their resources are endorsed by the Department for Education and the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government. We think Bristol children should be part of this incredible adventure!
